Both horses were recently stabled at the World Equestrian Center, in Ocala, during competition.

The equine herpesvirus-1 outbreak began at an FEI jumping competition in Valencia, Spain, with cases spreading to Belgium, France, and Germany. The FEI calls it “probably the most serious EHV-1 outbreak in Europe for decades.”
A. Gary Lavin, VMD, veterinarian, Thoroughbred breeder, and exemplar of leadership in his profession, died at his home in Louisville, Kentucky, on Feb. 27. He was 83.

Seventy-two potentially exposed horses were released from restricted movement following 14 days of monitoring.

Six exposed horses remain quarantined.
