A California man who escaped pursuing deputies by fleeing on a horse was charged with stealing the animal then overworking him during an extensive chase.
In April, Francis Jared Pusok allegedly evaded San Bernardo, California. Sheriff’s Department deputies when he fled on horseback during a chase through the county’s high desert area. Deputies apprehended Pusok when he fell from the horse. Subsequently, he sought and won a $650,000 settlement over how deputies treated him during the apprehension. The San Bernardo County Sheriff’s Department is investigating that treatment, said country public information officer David Wert.
Prosecutors subsequently charged Pusok with several offenses in connection with the chase, including grand theft of livestock for stealing the horse and overriding, overloadng, and overworking the animal. The complaint filed in the Superior Court of San Bernardo County also alleges that Pusok damaged property, obstructed a police officer, was under the influence of a controlled substance, received stolen property, and more.
