Embellished show shirts, a pair of ceramic horses, a kangaroo skin, and a tee shirt signed by football Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw are among the things listed in the federal government’s latest inventory of items once belonging to convicted embezzler Rita Crundwell.

In 2012, a federal grand jury indicted Crundwell for misappropriating more than $53 million in funds from the city of Dixon, Illinois, where she had served as comptroller since the 1980s. Federal agents later charged her with one count of wire fraud. Crundwell initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, but later changed her plea to guilty under a plea deal. Under that agreement, Crundwell admitted to stealing the funds from the city and using them to finance her Quarter Horse business. Crundwell also agreed that she owed Dixon $53,740,394 in restitution. She was sentenced to serve nearly 20 years in federal prison.

While Crundwell was incarcerated, 400 horses, stallion semen, horse trailers, a luxury motor home, real estate, and more, were sold at auction. The U.S. Marshal’s Service later filed a motion seeking the seizure of about 700 of Crundwell’s personal items, including World Show and Breeder’s Champion trophies and other awards and horse show apparel. Then, in June, the agency petitioned a federal court to allow it access to between $13,000 and $15,000 in frozen assets derived from American Paint Horse Association and American Quarter Horse Association breeders’ trust registries for the 2012 through 2014 horse show seasons, as well as $1,000 a year derived from a breeder’s incentive program through the National Snaffle Bit Association.
