The Blood-Horse has released its first long-form multimedia feature, “Saving New Lives.”

The Blood-Horse‘s Online Features Editor Claire Novak and the Blood-Horse visuals team embedded at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute’s neonatal intensive care unit, in Lexington, Ky., for several days and nights, with unprecedented access to the treatment wing, isolation, and surgery.

Guided by Nathan Slovis, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, CHT, and Technician Coordinator Lynne Hewlett they spent hours tracking the progress of several patients in the unit–including “the big mare,” whose story evolved into an anchor for "Saving New Lives."

Thanks to the cooperation of attending veterinarian Michele Frazer, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, ACVECC, and surgeon Dr. Robert Hunt, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVS, the team was able to set up in preparation for the mare’s C-section, and documented the process from prep to delivery
