American three-day eventer Boyd Martin’s 2010 World Equestrian Games partner, Neville Bardos, has returned to competition just two months after being rescued from a barn fire that killed six horses.
"Neville" was admitted to the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center immediately after the May 31 fire and remained at the facility for a week, where he was treated for smoke inhalation and associated tissue damage in his lungs. He was released from the clinic June 7.
Martin and Neville are currently competing at the Millbrook Horse Trials in Millbrook, N.Y., where they are leading one of the advanced divisions with a dressage score of 27.8. Over the past month Neville has done a few "warm-up" competitions before returning to the highest level of the sport this weekend.
Martin rode Neville to a 10th place finish at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, the highest place of any American eventer
