A Louisiana man is facing animal cruelty charges after a video of him allegedly abusing a horse he was riding in a New Orleans parade went viral.

In a written statement the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said that on Feb. 2, an onlooker shot a video of a man hitting and kicking a young horse during the Krewe of Oshun parade, an event held in advance of Mardi Gras.

Louisiana SPCA representative Alicia Haefele said the rider allegedly began hitting and kicking the horse after he became fearful of parade crowds and refused to move forward. The rider was later identified as a guest rider with the Nu Generations equestrian group. The group’s captain group accompanied the rider to SPCA headquarters where he was cited for animal cruelty. She did not name the rider. At the same time, the Nu Generations group was banned from riding future in Mardi Gras festivities, Haefele said.

“We made the decision out of public safety concerns for both riders and parade goers,” she said
