Modern Pentathlon Horse Injured, Euthanized at Asian Games

A horse died Nov. 23 after a fall in the show jumping phase in the modern pentathlon competition at the 2010 Asian Games, which are currently under way in Guangzhou, China.

A horse died Nov. 23 after a fall in the show jumping phase in the modern pentathlon competition at the 2010 Asian Games, which are currently under way in Guangzhou, China.

According to reports Galina Dolgushina of Kazakhstan was riding the horse D252 when he crashed through a jump, breaking his neck in the process. Veterinarians euthanized D252 due to the severity of his injuries.

Dolgushina was reportedly unconscious after the fall and was taken to the hospital. Her condition is now reported as stable.

Modern pentathlon is a five-phase competition that includes the sports of fencing, swimming, show jumping, shooting, and cross-country running. Modern pentathletes do not compete on their own horses; the host nation provides a pool of horses for the competition
