John Stick, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, professor emeritus at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, received the American Association of Equine Practitioners’ (AAEP) 2018 Distinguished Educator – Academic Award for his contributions to the profession over four decades as an educator, mentor, clinician, and scientist.

The Distinguished Educator – Academic Award honors an individual who by his or her actions and commitment has demonstrated a significant impact on the development and training of equine practitioners. Stick was honored Dec. 4 during the President’s Luncheon at the 2018 AAEP Convention in San Francisco, California.

During his 43 years as an academician, Stick trained 32 surgery residents and 26 graduate students and mentored many junior faculty. His case-based teaching style instilled problem solving and confidence in his students, many of whom now hold senior positions in private or academic practice around the world and are training the next generation of equine surgeons
