Horses are exposed to the same air we breathe which often contain pollutants, pollen, and more.

The quality of air in barns and stables is often poor due to dust, mold, and other airborne irritants, which causes horses to experience inflammation, extra mucus, and restrictive breathing.

While both human and horse lungs share a long list of similar characteristics, and horse lungs are proportionally equal to human lungs, their capacities are quite distinct.

Humans inhale and exhale somewhere around 7 to 8 liters of air each minute, while nearly 60 liters of air move in and out a horse’s lungs every minute!

Due to this large lung capacity, horses often have issues with normal mucociliary clearance, and, in fact, there are specific guidelines for measuring this excess mucus, especially with Thoroughbred and racehorses.

According to the Salt Therapy Association, dry salt therapy (aka halotherapy) is a natural, drug-free therapy that helps combat respiratory issues such as equine asthma, heaves, Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO), and skin conditions like dermatitis, boils, mud fever, and ringworm.

During an equine salt therapy session, micron-sized salt particles penetrate deep into the lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli to reduce inflammation, dissolve bacteria, and cleanse the respiratory system.

A clean respiratory system from salt therapy will allow for:

  • Improved lung function
  • Increased oxygen-carrying capacity
  • Clearer airways

These vital performance enhancers may:

  • Increase the horse’s stamina
  • Raise its energy level
  • Help it run faster
  • Enhance recovery

Horses also face extreme skin conditions from being exposed to wind, dirt, mud, and other factors.
