Eighty horses are residing at a Los Angeles fairgrounds (known as the Fairplex) after being evacuated from a ranch threatened by a wildfire burning near Glendora, Calif. More horses are expected to be removed from the fire zone, according a Fairplex representative.

Lt. Matt Williams, of the Glendora Police Department, said his department received several phone calls reporting a fire in the Los Angeles County foothills at about 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 16. Glendora Police personnel, along with personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department, responded to blaze. As of the afternoon of Jan. 16, nearly 2,000 residents were evacuated and two homes were destroyed by the wildfire, Williams said.

Renee Hernandez, the Fairplex’s communications and public relations supervisor, said owners in the Los Angeles foothills started transporting horses to the facility after authorities began door-to-door evacuations.

“Right now in addition to the 80 horses, we have four miniature donkeys, five llamas, and we are expecting another 85 horses,” Hernandez said. “In all we expect about 200 animals
