A Louisiana man has been charged with theft after allegedly stealing a horse before selling the animal at an auction.

Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, Sheriff's Department Captain Craig Stansbury said an owner reported that a horse was stolen from a Carencro, Louisiana, property on Sept 29. The owner also reported the theft to the Louisiana Livestock Brand Commission, Stansbury said.

John Walter, assistant commissioner of the Louisiana Livestock Brand Commission, said the horse was found at an auction in Kinder, Louisiana, on the same day.

Acting on an arrest warrant, on Oct. 2, Lafayette Parish Sheriff's personnel arrested Terry Lemaire, Sr. in connection with the horse theft, Stansbury said. Lemaire is charged with one count of theft of livestock, he said
