Two horses were killed and their riders seriously injured when a motorist searching for his cell phone collided with them on a Florida roadway.

Sergeant Mark Leone, public information officer for the Davie Police Department, said a motorist was traveling eastbound on a roadway in Southwest Ranches, Florida, on July 8 when he dropped his cell phone.

“When he bent over to pick up his phone, two horses with riders were crossing the road northbound and were struck by the vehicle,” Leone said. “Both riders were ejected off the horses, and both horses died on scene.”

The riders, including a 9-year-old girl, were transported to a nearby by hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, he said. The driver was unharmed
