The American Horse Council (AHC) and the American Horse Council Foundation have filed a lawsuit accusing their former communications director Ashley Furst of embezzling more than $500,000.

The complaint filed Sept. 25 in U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado alleges that Furst “orchestrated a complex and carefully planned criminal enterprise whereby she stole at least $588,061.84 from the nonprofit and its charitable foundation over the course of nearly five years.”

The complaint claims the funds were allegedly used to support a “lavish lifestyle and to make large purchases
