Florida Issues Advisory After Equine WNV, EEE Diagnoses

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) has confirmed two new cases of West Nile virus (WNV) and one new case of Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) in Florida.

The two WNV diagnoses include:

  • Johns County’s second WNV case for 2019, a 13-year-old pony mare with unreported vaccination status that experienced clinical signs beginning Sept. 20; and
  • Citrus County’s first and Florida’s seventh WNV case for the year, a 5-year-old mare, also with unreported vaccination status, that first experienced clinical signs on Sept. 24.

Both horses were subsequently euthanized.

The EEE-positive horse, a weanling Quarter Horse colt with unreported vaccination history, was also euthanized. The colt was Clay County’s first and Florida’s 28th equine case of EEE in 2019
