A horse rescue founder in Galveston County, Texas, is hoping a cash reward will help police identify those responsible for stealing a horse out of the organization’s pasture.

Jerry Finch, founder of the Habitat for Horses equine rescue, said staff members discovered the animal missing on May 29 during a count of the horses on the property. When incident occurred, the 6-year-old bay gelding called Reynolds was grazing in a 50-acre pasture with 50 other animals, Finch said. The other horses were unharmed.

"Sunday evening about 7 (someone) cut the fence on our grazing pasture, put a rope around Reynolds, and walked off, Finch said. According to witnesses, (the alleged thief) pulled the horse from the back of a pickup until traffic backed up, then walked, pulling on the horse when it balked.

Finch said Habitat for Horses received Reynolds two years ago after he was involved in a law enforcement case.

"The staff who brought him from (being) starved and untouchable two years ago to the healthy, happy pony he is now is heartbroken. Finch said. (We had) 20 years in this business, and we’ve never had a horse stolen.

Habitat for Horses is offering a $1,000 cash reward for the arrest and conviction the person or people responsible for the theft.

"We are also offering a $500 cash reward for just bringing the horse back, no questions asked, Finch said.

The La Marque Police Department is investigating the case.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the LaMarque Crime Stoppers at (409)/938-TIPS (8477).
