Illinois authorities are seeking whoever shot a horse grazing in a Woodford County pasture.

Woodford County, Illinois, Sheriff Matt Smith said deputies responded to a call from an owner who found her horse lying in a pasture on April 1. The horse had sustained one fatal gunshot wound to the neck, Smith said.

Smith said the horse’s owner reported hearing a pair of noises followed by a car door slamming.

“She had no description other than it was a gray car,” he said.

A veterinarian called to the scene used a field X ray machine to locate the bullet, Smith said.

“We’ll get the bullet from the veterinarian,” he said.

Smith declined further comment on the ongoing investigation.
