American Event Horse Mandiba Suffers Broken Rib
- Topics: Article, Pain Management
Mandiba, an 11-year-old Irish Thoroughbred gelding ridden by American Olympic veteran Karen O’Connor, suffered a broken rib while competing in the cross-country phase at the Badminton Horse Trials in Badminton, England, April 24. The horse is expected to make a full recovery.
O’Connor and Mandiba fell at Fence 11 on course (the "Outlander Bank"). Reports from numerous publications indicate that after successfully completing the first element of the obstacle (a step-up onto a bank), Mandiba refused the second element (a post-and-rail log on top of the bank). O’Connor was thrown from the tack before the horse fell off the bank, breaking his rib in the process.
Together, O’Connor and Mandiba represented the United States at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
