With more than a decade of experience in veterinary science, Bobby Cowles, DVM, MS, MBA, is bringing his passion for the horse and expertise in equine health to work on the veterinary operations team that supports Pfizer Animal Health’s equine business. In his new role, Cowles will meet with fellow veterinarians to discuss the latest developments in equine health, and practitioners’ needs in the field, as well as being a resource for the Pfizer Animal Health equine team.

While working on his doctorate in veterinary medicine at Kansas State, Cowles discovered that the equine athlete presented a special set of challenges for veterinary practitioners. Although he had previously been more interested in cattle, Cowles switched his pursuits to equine care, focusing on endurance and other physically demanding sports. Cowles and his family reside in Ridgefield, Wash., and enjoy recreational riding whenever they can.

Cowles said he particularly enjoys the educational aspect of veterinary practice and the interaction with horse owners and his colleagues in veterinary care.

Working with Pfizer Animal Health’s current senior veterinarians in equine health–Robert Holland, DVM, PhD, and John Donecker, VMD, MS–Cowles said he looks forward to tackling key areas of equine health that are of particular concern to horse owners, such as infectious disease and parasite prevention.

“Equine veterinary operations is looking forward to Dr. Cowles expertise, not only as an equine practitioner, but also for his business acumen,” Donecker said. “Dr. Cowles has a unique skill set, which I look forward to working with and learning from him.”
