Evelyn Pollard’s Saratoga County, winner of the Dubai Golden Shaheen (a Grade 1 race–G1) in the United Arab Emirates in late March, was euthanatized on July 29 after developing laminitis. The Thoroughbred was being treated for colitis at the Saratoga Equine Veterinary Hospital in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., before his condition took a turn for the worse. The 4-year-old was scheduled to begin his stud career at Vinery Florida in 2006.

Trained by George Weaver, Saratoga County developed into one of the most accomplished sprinters in the country after winning the Mr. Prospector H. (G3) at Gulfstream Park and the General George H. (G2) at Laurel Park before capturing the Dubai Golden Shaheen by one length over an international field that included Pico Central (Brz) (Spend a Buck). At three, the bay won the Gotham S. (G3) at Aqueduct. Overall, he earned $1,646,590 from a record of 17-6-4-1.
