Horses Rescued From Illegal Slaughter Farm

Two horses are receiving rehabilitative care after being taken from an illegal slaughter farm in Florida.
Laurie Waggoner, director of ranch operations for the South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said the agency assisted the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Agricultural l Unit in investigating a suspected illegal slaughter farm in southwest Miami-Dade County on Aug. 23. Upon arrival, investigators found two horses, including a rare Florida Cracker Horse mare, living in “deplorable conditions,” she said. They also found the heads of three cattle and a calf at the scene.
“When we got there a steer was on the trailer waiting to be slaughtered,” Waggoner said.
All the animals were taken to the South Florida SPCA Ranch; the horses were placed under quarantine and will ultimately be available for adoption, she said
