Two California groups hope the offer of cash rewards will help lead law enforcement authorities in that state to whoever is responsible for fatally shooting a horse while it grazed in its pasture earlier this week.

Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department Watch Commander Lt. Glenn Lawrence said that on Nov. 4, a horse was grazing in its pasture in Santa Rosa, Calif., near the Annadel State Park, when it sustained a wound from a high-powered rifle. The wounded horse returned to its home stable, collapsed, and died at the scene, he said.

Lawrence said that later on the same day law enforcement personnel returned to the shooting scene in response to reports of gunfire. A ground and air search yielded not results, he said.

The probe into the incident is ongoing, Lawrence said
