Nutrition, Senior Horse Care to be Featured at 2011 Bi-State Horse Workshop
Midwest horse enthusiasts are encouraged to register for the Illinois/Wisconsin Bi-State Horse Workshop on April 2, at the Kenosha County Center in Bristol, Wis.
A full-day program organized and sponsored by Illinois and Wisconsin Cooperative Extension will offer three tracts for participants to choose from including a trail riding tract, senior horse tract, and advanced horseman tract.
Kevin Kline, PhD, University of Illinois (U of I) professor of animal sciences and Extension horse specialist, will discuss how to avoid poisonous plants and care for your horse’s nutrition needs while trail riding. He will also address the topic of nutrition for the senior horse and performance horse during his breakout sessions.
"Horses have different nutritional needs according to their use," Kline said. "I’ll share strategies for feeding performance horses to reduce heat load, encourage aerobic metabolism of fats and oils, and determining how to time feeding in relation to exercise routines to minimize stress
