The English arrived in Jamestown in 1607. They imported horses just three years later. So it is perhaps fitting that northern Virginia horse country will commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown landing with a polo match.

And not just any polo match. The inaugural America’s Cup of Polo will be held today (May 12) at historic Morven Park in Leesburg, pitting an American all-star team against a British club.

The event is the creation of Loudoun County vintner and polo player Tareq Salahi, who will serve as captain of the four-player American squad. Also on the U.S. squad is Charles Muldoon, one of the top-rated players in the U.S.

The British squad features higher-ranked players, including some with a 9-handicap. Polo players are ranked in a handicap system, with only a few players in the world reaching the highest rank of 10, Salahi said
