Nutramax Laboratories, Inc., has established The Chief’s Pride Awards in honor of Pride, an inaugural Cosequin Equine Exemplary Service Award winner and retired Rochester, NY police horse. Each year for the next three years, the Rochester Chief of Police will select an outstanding police horse in the Rochester, NY unit. The officer assigned to that horse will choose a charity to be the recipient of a donation in the horse’s name.

The 2000 Chief’s Pride Award was presented by Rochester Chief of Police Robert Duffy at a press conference in Rochester to the award’s namesake, Pride. Officer Laurie Kingsley, who was Pride’s partner for nearly ten years, chose the Therapeutic Riding Program of The United Cerebral Palsy Association of the Rochester Area to be the recipient of the inaugural Chief’s Pride Award.

“I am very proud of the work that both Pride and Officer Laurie Kingsley have done for the City of Rochester and I am delighted that they have received national attention. It is a great honor to have had one of Rochester’s own police horses selected for an award from over 500 nominees,” said Chief Robert Duffy. “The Chief’s Pride Awards are a wonderful way for Pride, although now in retirement, to continue serving the Rochester area. We are grateful to Nutramax Laboratories for this award and for honoring our mounted police unit.”

Pride is a 24-year-old Appaloosa gelding whose life is a testimony to his giving spirit and extraordinary patience. Throughout his multiple careers, Pride has played the role of accomplished show horse, enthusiastic parade horse, gentle leadline mount and, most recently, as a level-headed police horse who has made a significant contribution to the Rochester Police Department as an officer and ambassador to the community.
