Franklin County, Alabama, law enforcement authorities are hoping the public can help identify whoever fatally shot four horses and a mule and wounded another horse.

Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver said an owner reported finding one of his horses dead in pasture on Aug. 25. The next morning three other horses were found dead, along with a mule and a Labrador Retriever.

Deputies’ investigation revealed that sometime between the evening of Aug. 25 and the morning of Aug. 26, all the animals had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Another horse also sustained a gunshot wound, but is recovering, Oliver said.

Oliver said the shootings remain under investigation
