An 8-year-old Quarter Horse gelding was euthanized after testing positive for equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1).

A statement posted on the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Veterinary Medicine’s website indicates the horse, which was used for barrel racing, presented to its Veterinary Medical Center on March 18 for acute onset neurologic disease.

"The gelding tested positive for EHV-1 and was placed in isolation," the statement read. "The gelding was euthanized on March 21, 2015, due to deterioration of clinical signs in the face of aggressive supportive care
