Veterinarians diagnosed the latest five cases in Atlantic, Morris, Ocean, and Salem counties.
Michigan counties affected by Eastern equine encephalomyelitis now include Barry, Lapeer, Kalamazoo, and St. Joseph.
Horses from five counties are affected.
The diagnosis marks the state’s third confirmed EEE case for 2019.
All horses were unvaccinated, and all were euthanized.
The horse, which had been rescued six weeks prior to presentation, had an unknown vaccination history.
The diagnosis of an unvaccinated yearling colt is the state’s first EEE case since 2013.
Veterinarians euthanized the 6-month-old colt due to poor prognosis. Additionally, the state has reported its first human case since 2010.
The unvaccinated Ashtabula County horse succumbed to the deadly EEE virus.
Both Elkhart County horses were euthanized.
The 15-year-old unvaccinated mare was confirmed positive for EEE on Aug. 28 and euthanized after showing clinical signs beginning Aug. 18.
The diagnosis marks Putnam County’s second positive Eastern equine encephalomyelitis case for 2019.
The unvaccinated 12-year-old Quarter Horse mare presented on Aug. 13 with ataxia, fever, head-pressing, and tremors and died from the disease on Aug. 14.
Two Oswego County horses succumb to the disease.
