Companion Horse Medical Coverage Options Expanding

Some equine veterinary practices have been offering wellness and medical coverage programs for horses of all ages, breeds, and uses for years. And now, owners have the option of purchasing insurance policies to cover some of companion horses’ medical expenses.

Traditionally, equine insurance policies have been purchased by owners of sport and breeding horses. Such policies can cover costs associated with medical care, surgery, loss of use, and mortality, and were designed to protect the owner’s investment.

In June, the Crum & Foster Pet Insurance Group began offering American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Pet Health Insurance to owners of horses that do not hold a high monetary value.

“There are many owners who consider their horse a pet, a part of the family, and are looking for only the medical insurance,” said Gina Fortunato, vice president of veterinary services for Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group, “Our product provides the veterinary care insurance that can provide reimbursement for veterinary bills when the horse gets injured or becomes sick
