The Michigan State University (MSU) College of Veterinary Medicine is pleased to congratulate our 4th year equine veterinary student Laura Hoholik for receiving 2011 Markel Scholarship. The award was presented to Hoholik at the 57th  American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Annual Convention San Antonio, Texas November 18-22, 2011.

The Markel Scholarship is presented to eight, fourth-year veterinary students from across the United States and Canada. The scholarships are awarded to the "best-of-the-best" veterinary students who plan to pursue a career in equine veterinary practice, possess academic excellence, and display leadership in activities that benefit the health and welfare of the horse. Each college of veterinary medicine may submit one candidate to compete for these eight scholarships. Student applicants also are supported by AAEP members and clinical instructors.

"The Markel Scholarship is the oldest scholarship the AAEP offers," said Luke Ramsey, AAEP Student Programs Coordinator. "It’s a really coveted award and the list of past recipients is rather impressive. Scholarships are awarded to students who look to have a long, committed career in equine medicine and who we expect to see in leadership positions in the AAEP in the future."

The $2,500 award is cosponsored by the AAEP Foundation and the Markel Insurance Company. Since 1989, more than $320,000 has been allocated in financial assistance to veterinary students through this scholarship program
