Fire investigators believe that a lightning strike could have caused the death of a horse located in a Fort Gratiot, Michigan, barn.

Fort Gratiot Fire Chief Patrick Smith said that on Sept. 5 fire department personnel responded to a fire at a boarding barn at a Fort Gratiot farm. Twenty horses were located in the barn at the time of the blaze, Smith said. The barn was significantly consumed in fire when firefights arrived, he said. One horse was found dead on the floor of its stall.  Rescuers led the remaining horses to safety, he said. Equipment and hay were also lost in the blaze, Smith said.

Smith said the fire could have started with a lightning strike connected to strong storms moving through the area.

No foul play is suspected in the incident, Smith said
