I don’t use gear until the fly season gets worse than what I can control with fly predators, manure removal and fly spray. Then I use a fly sheet and fly mask unless the heat and humidity make the gear more harmful than the flies.
When our horses lived with us, we used a feed through larvacide and had no fly issues. Now, at a boarding barn, it is a challenge. Mine can get her double Velcro fly mask off overnight. My husband has made his own fly spray that works wonders adding Cedarcide to regular fly spray. His mare will leave a mask on a couple days, but we find them a losing battle. Too hot for blankets where we are.
