A 10-day-old foal in Switzerland became the world’s first horse to undergo successful balloon valvuloplasty to correct a faulty pulmonary artery valve.

One horse died, one was euthanized. Both were unvaccinated against Eastern equine encephalomyelitis.

The case marks the state’s first confirmed case of WNV in an equine this year.

The horses are the state’s seventh and eighth equids confirmed with EEE in 2021.

The mare’s vaccination status is unknown.

This is Lexington County’s fifth confirmed WNV case in 2021.

Two more BC horses are suspected with the disease.

The pony’s vaccination and health status are unknown.

Both horses were tested to fulfill requirements prior to export to the United States.

The horse’s vaccination status for EEE is unclear.
